McGinnis Academy of Martial Arts: More Than Just a Gym

For this month’s Small Business Spotlight, I wanted to feature a place that has had a major impact on my life over the past several years: McGinnis Academy of Martial Arts in Gastonia.

Located on Wilkinson Boulevard, McGinnis Academy has been my home for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training since June of 2017. Over that time, I’ve not only grown as a martial artist, but I’ve also developed a close friendship with the academy’s owner and head instructor, Shawn McGinnis.

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Shawn and talk about how he got started in martial arts, what makes the academy different, and why martial arts continues to change lives far beyond the mats.

How Shawn McGinnis Got Started

Shawn’s journey into martial arts started out of necessity.

Back in 1990, he was working as a probation and parole officer for the state of North Carolina. At the time, officers weren’t armed, and physical confrontations had to be handled without the tools many officers carry today.

After one difficult encounter where he struggled to control a probationer during an arrest, Shawn realized he needed to sharpen his self-defense skills.

That experience led him into martial arts training.

He initially began studying Taekwondo before expanding into Hapkido and eventually Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Decades later, Shawn has built an impressive martial arts résumé that includes:

  • Third-degree black belt in Taekwondo
  • Fourth-degree black belt in Hapkido
  • Third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Carlson Gracie Jr.

For those unfamiliar with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history, Carlson Gracie Jr. comes directly from the legendary Gracie family, one of the founding families of the art.

What Makes McGinnis Academy Different

There are plenty of martial arts schools.

What makes McGinnis Academy stand out is the culture.

From the moment you walk in, there’s a strong sense of community. Higher belts help newer students. Families train together. The atmosphere is competitive when it needs to be, but welcoming at the same time.

One thing Shawn mentioned during our conversation really stood out to me:

“If someone walks through the door for the first time, it’s our responsibility to make them feel welcome.”

That mentality is felt throughout the academy.

It’s one of the reasons so many students stay for years.

World-Class Instruction in Gastonia

Another thing that separates McGinnis Academy is the level of instruction students are exposed to.

Over the years, the academy has hosted seminars featuring some of the biggest names in martial arts and combat sports, including:

  • Carlson Gracie Jr.
  • Josh Barnett
  • Dean Lister
  • UFC fighters and high-level competitors from around the country

Shawn believes bringing in elite-level instructors gives students opportunities they normally wouldn’t get at a local academy.

And after training there myself for years, I’d agree.

Programs for Kids and Adults

McGinnis Academy offers programs for both children and adults, including:

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
  • Taekwondo
  • Hapkido

There’s also a Little Ninja program for younger children that focuses on coordination, discipline, and confidence through martial arts-based movement and training.

For adults, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become one of the academy’s most popular programs because of its practical self-defense applications, fitness benefits, and mental challenge.

Shawn also works with law enforcement and security professionals, providing specialized defensive tactics and self-defense training.

Martial Arts Beyond Fighting

One of the biggest misconceptions about martial arts is that it’s only about fighting.

In reality, many people train for completely different reasons.

Some students are there to:

  • Improve their fitness
  • Build confidence
  • Relieve stress
  • Challenge themselves mentally
  • Lose weight
  • Develop discipline

The physical benefits are obvious, but the mental benefits are just as important.

Shawn shared a story about a student who joined the academy in his early 50s weighing around 350 pounds. Over time, that student lost nearly 100 pounds and completely transformed his health and confidence.

Those stories are common in martial arts.

People often come in looking for one thing and leave with much more.

A Personal Perspective

After training at McGinnis Academy since 2017, I can honestly say it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

The academy has pushed me physically, mentally, and personally.

It’s also introduced me to some incredible people and lifelong friendships.

Whether your goal is self-defense, fitness, competition, or simply trying something new, McGinnis Academy offers an environment where people can genuinely grow.

Final Thoughts

McGinnis Academy of Martial Arts has become much more than a martial arts school in Gastonia.

It’s a place where people improve themselves, build confidence, develop discipline, and become part of a strong community.

That starts with Shawn McGinnis and the culture he’s built over decades of teaching and training.

If you’ve ever considered trying martial arts, I highly recommend stopping by and checking it out for yourself. The academy offers free trial classes, and it’s one of those places you really need to experience firsthand.
